This easy out-and-back walk takes us from the postcard-perfect village of Low Newton-by-the-Sea along open sands and grassy paths to the dramatic ruins of the historic Dunstanburgh Castle. \nThis route is all about space\, fresh air\, and perspective to kick off the new year. Expect wide skies\, sea views that stretch for miles\, seabirds riding the wind\, and the quiet rhythm of walking beside the North Sea. The castle appears slowly on the horizon\, growing more impressive with every step\, until its dark stone ruins rise directly from the coast like something out of legend. \nWe’ll take our time\, keeping the pace relaxed and social\, with plenty of opportunities to stop\, chat\, take photos\, and simply enjoy being outside. This is a walk designed to be easy and deeply refreshing. \nAfter returning to Low Newton\, those who wish can stay on to enjoy food and drinks at the famous beachside pub\, The Ship Inn\, the perfect way to warm up and wind down after a morning by the coast. \n\nA Bit of Local History\nDunstanburgh Castle was built in the 14th century and has stood for centuries facing directly over the North Sea\, battered by wind\, salt\, and storms. It was once a symbol of power and defiance\, later falling into ruin and becoming one of the most atmospheric castle remains in the UK. Walking toward it along the coast feels timeless\, the same path trodden by kings\, queens\, fishermen\, soldiers\, and ramblers long before us. \nLow Newton itself is a tiny fishing village with deep roots in Northumberland’s coastal heritage. Its quiet charm\, simple cottages\, and sweeping beach make it the perfect starting point for a slow\, January coastal escape. \n\nWhy This Event Matters\nThis walk is about simplicity. No pressure\, no pace goals\, no need to “achieve” anything\, just movement\, conversation\, sea air\, and shared experience. Coastal walking has a way of clearing the head and opening space for reflection\, and this route offers that in abundance. Whether you come for the views\, the company\, or just the excuse to get outside\, this is a chance to slow down and reconnect\, with nature and with each other. \n\nPartners and Perks\nDeep North Donuts – A handmade donut for each attendee after the walkGrisport Boot Giveaway – One pair of brand new boots given away to a lucky attendee at randomSpin the Wheel Prize Giveaway – Smaller prizes including free hike spaces\, Farne Islands trips\, Running Fox vouchers\, and more will be given away to a lucky attendee at random \n\nEvent Details\nDistance: Approx. 5.6 milesDifficulty Level: EasyEstimated Duration: 3–4 hours (including stops)Terrain: Sandy beach\, grassy coastal paths \n\nWhat to Bring\n\nComfortable walking boots or Hiking shoes suitable for sand\nWindproof / waterproof jacket\nWarm layers (it can be breezy on the coast)\n\n\nFood and Drink\n\nAt least 1 litre of water\nSnacks for the walk\nOptional food and drinks afterward at Low Newton (paid individually)\n\n\nOther Essentials\n\nFully charged phone or camera\nPersonal first aid basics\nCash/Card for parking\n\n\nItinerary\n🕘 9:00 AM – Check in at Low Newton-by-the-Sea (exact location shared post sign up)🥾 9:15 AM – Begin coastal walk toward Dunstanburgh Castle📸 Mid-walk – Time at the castle ruins for photos and rest☕ Late morning / early afternoon – Return to Low Newton for optional food and drinks/drive home \n\nCommunity Connection\nA private Instagram group chat will be opened before the event so everyone can introduce themselves and connect ahead of the walk. The headland forms part of a National Nature Reserve\, home to guillemots\, razorbills\, and kittiwakes that nest on ledges high above the water. Its cinematic pull isn’t new\, from Avengers to Adore You\, filmmakers have been drawn here for its raw\, untamed beauty and timeless character. Walking here feels like stepping into both the borders natural history and pop-culture mythology at once. \n\nWhy This Matters\nAt Tyne to Summit\, our walks are about more than walking countless miles. They’re moments of connection\, creativity\, and calm aimed at all abilities\, we don’t hike mountains\, we walk\, talk and make moments. This one invites you to slow down and stand where epic stories were imagined\, while creating your own memories along the cliffs. Because the best scenes aren’t filmed\, they’re lived.
