A Christmas Day Ramble: Community, Fresh Air, and a Little Bit of Magic

Christmas can be a strange time of year.

For some, it’s full of noise, family, tradition, and celebration. For others, it can feel quiet, lonely, or overwhelming. And for many, it’s a mix of both. We’ve always believed that nobody should feel alone, this is why we set up Tyne To Summit in the first place; especially on a day that’s meant to bring people together.

So this Christmas Day, we decided to do something simple: go for a walk. Together.

We met in Whitley Bay, wrapped up in hats, gloves, and plenty of layers, ready for a gentle ramble along the coast to Seaton Sluice and back. The winter air was crisp, the sea was restless, and the sky had that soft, pale glow that only seems to happen at this time of year.

From the moment we set off, the mood was light. There were smiles, laughter, and plenty of festive chatter. Even some mince pies! Everyone was in good spirits and one legend even turned up dressed as Santa, instantly lifting the mood and earning a fair few double-takes from passing dog walkers and families. Even lighting up a few children’s faces along the way, mint!

As we walked, conversations flowed easily. Some people shared stories of their Christmas traditions, others talked about the year they’d had, and some were simply happy to stroll, listen, and take in the views. There was no pressure, no expectations, just a group of people moving together, enjoying fresh air, connection, and the simple comfort of not being alone.

By the time we reached Seaton Sluice, cheeks were red, hands were chilly, and spirits were high. And as we made our way back along the coast, it felt like we’d created something quietly special, a small pocket of togetherness on a day that can mean very different things to different people.

That’s what Tyne to Summit is all about.

Not big gestures. Not grand statements. Just showing up, creating space, and reminding each other that community still matters, especially here Up North, when it’s needed most. It’s what we do.

To everyone who came along, thank you. You made our Christmas Day brighter, warmer, and far more meaningful.

Here’s to more walks, more connection, and more moments that remind us how powerful simple kindness can be.
