Hiking Boots/Trail Shoes – Nee flip-flops here, mate! You need some comfy, sturdy boots with decent grip. Blisters are nee fun, so make sure they’re well broken in.
Waterproof Jacket – One thing we know up North is that the weather has a mind of its own. A good waterproof jacket is essential, even if it starts off sunny. Keep ya dry when it starts chucking it down!
Layers of Clothing – Ye mam was right, layers are the way forward. Start with a base layer, chuck a fleece on top, then that waterproof to finish. Be ready for any weather – it’s the North East, after all – howay man!
Walking Trousers – Divint be daft, get some proper troosers! Ditch the soggy jeans, pet! Walking trousers are quick-drying, comfy, packed with pockets, and tough enough to handle any weather – making your hike a canny bit better!
Water Bottle – Got to stay hydrated, pet! 2 litres should do the trick, unless you’re planning on running a marathon instead of a hike, like.
Snacks – The best part of hiking, let’s be honest. Pack some energy-boosting snacks – fruit, chocolate, crisps, or if you’re a true Geordie, a Gregg’s pasty or a good owld stottie! Whatever keeps ya going.
Backpack – Nee fashion statements here, just something practical to carry your essentials. Not too big or too small – just enough for ya gear and a few snacks.

Map & Compass (Or Phone GPS) – We’ll be leading the way, but it’s always good to have your own backup. Plus, your phone’s good for taking pics (as long as the battery doesn’t die from ya Instagram videos eh!).
Hat & Gloves – Even if it’s not Baltic, it can still get nippy up on them hills. A hat and gloves won’t take up much space, but they’ll make you proper glad you brought them.
Sunscreen – Aye, you heard us! The sun does shine sometimes, even up here. Don’t fancy looking like a lobster by the end of the day, do ye?
Spare Socks – Ever had wet feet for hours? It’s the worst, trust us. Chuck in an extra pair of socks for when you inevitably step in a puddle (we all do it).
First Aid Kit – Just a small one for any scrapes or blisters. Nowt serious, but handy to have!
Optional, But Canny Useful (Or, “Look Proper Prepared Like a Pro”)
Trekking Poles – Fancy looking like a seasoned pro? Grab some trekking poles. They’ll save your knees on the way down and make you feel unstoppable on the way up.
Head Torch – Just in case the hike runs late or you want to tell ghost stories around a campfire (if you’re that way inclined).
Gaiters – These nifty things stop mud and water getting into ya boots when you’re knee-deep in bogs. Might save ya a soggy disaster!
Spare Socks – Wet feet are a nightmare, mate! Pack a spare pair of socks and save yourself from blisters, cold toes, and a hike that feels like ya walking in puddles the whole way!

Camera/Phone – You’ll want some snaps of the stunning views (and to prove you made it to the top, of course). Don’t forget your camera, or just use your phone – but don’t drain the battery with all those selfies, yee heard!
