A Proper Lush Hike with Tyne To Summit – Craster To Howick Circular Ramble

Well, pet, what a belter of a Saturday we had on the 1st of March with Tyne To Summit! A proper canny bunch of 25 turned out for a grand morning ramble along the stunning Northumberland coast, and we couldn’t have asked for better company or weather. A mix of all abilities, ages, and experience levels, proving that the great outdoors is for everyone – just as it should be!

The Start – Sweet Treats & Good Spirits

We kicked off bright and early, and what better way to fuel up than with some Deep North Donuts? Absolute heaven, them. They went down an absolute treat, and let’s be honest, there were probably a few who could’ve happily stopped the walk there and just had another round of scran!

Bellies filled, we set off past the Jolly Fisherman, the smell of smoky kippers wafting through the air – for those who don’t know, the village of Craster is famous for it’s kippers – a proper Northumberland brekky! Spirits were high, and we were off to a cracking start, ready to take in some of the most majestic views the North East has to offer.

Rambling Along the Cliffs

Nowt quite like Northumberland’s coastline, is there? The cliffs stretched ahead, the North Sea shimmering in the morning sun – a rare treat after all the winter gloom! Isn’t it crazy what a little bit of sun does for the mood? Everyone was chatting away, swapping stories, and getting to know each other as we made our way along the rugged edge of the world.

Before we knew it, we’d arrived at our very own secluded beach, with the iconic Howick Bathing House standing proudly in the distance. A proper postcard moment, we stopped and had a quick water break whilst taking it all in!

A Spot of History – Earl Grey & Howick Bathing House

Now, you might know Howick Hall, just up the road, as the home of Earl Grey, aye, the tea bloke himself! This fella wasn’t just about fancy brews, though – he was a Prime Minister in the early 1800s and was instrumental in abolishing slavery in the British Empire. Not a bad legacy, eh? As for Howick Bathing House, this little gem was built for the Grey family, so they could enjoy a dip in the sea without the riff-raff watching! How the other half live, eh?

Onwards & Upwards

After soaking in the views (and, let’s be honest, some folk contemplating an icy dip – but thankfully, sense prevailed, it’s not summer just yet!), we cracked on. Regular pit stops, plenty of banter, and some top-notch views of the endless North Sea made for a hike to remember. The dogs were having the time of their lives, tails wagging away like little wind turbines!

Before long, we found ourselves back where we started, ready for a well-earned pint and a bit of fun with a round of Spin the Wheel. Scott, who came along with his lovely wife Tracy and daughter Meg, bagged himself 2x tickets for a Newcastle Stadium Tour! Howay the luck!

What a Day – Bring on the Retreat!

All in all, it was a cracking morning, full of laughter, good vibes, and unbeatable views. As always, Tyne To Summit delivered, and we can’t wait to do it all again soon. Our end-of-the-month retreat is already sold out, so if you’ve missed out this time, keep an eye out for the next adventure in April (providing our Steph hasn’t popped the little bairn out by then) – we promise it’ll be just as good!

Here’s to more canny hikes, good company, and that unbeatable North East charm! See you on the next one!
