Wey aye, what a canny day we had on Saturday the 1st of February! Twenty beautiful souls rocked up for a magical hike around Roseberry Topping, a 6.2-mile loop that had everything we love – top-notch crack, lush views, and even a cheeky game of spin the wheel.
We kicked off the day with the vibes already sky-high, and honestly, they stayed that way right until the last drop of watta was sipped. With plenty new faces and a fair few familiar ones, we set off to tackle the steep incline up Roseberry Topping, the iconic hill known for its unique shape that looks like the North East’s answer to the Matterhorn (Middlesborough’s Matterhorn!). It’s proper class up there, like. Historically, it’s seen everything from Viking settlers to ironstone mining, so we couldn’t help but pause and take it all in. Although it’s a good job Scott kept his hat on at the top as the howling wind would have exposed his honking hairline! Oops!

Once we’d nailed the summit selfies and admired the view (honestly, you could see for miles – the weather was lush), we set off towards Captain Cook’s Monument. This monument honours one of the North East’s finest explorers, Captain James Cook, who grew up just a few miles from the area. Standing proud on Easby Moor, it was the perfect spot for a breather, a bit of history chat, a few hoys of the ball for the panting pups and of course, some cracking photos.
Now, let’s talk about the highlight of the hike – our brand-new spin the wheel game. One lucky hiker bags a prize each time, and this time Helen was the star of the show, winning herself a belta afternoon tea for two at The Running Fox. Nice one, Helen – you’ve certainly earned it!
And if that wasn’t enough, we officially introduced our new snack partner: Deep North Donuts. By God, those are the best donuts in town, and they went down an absolute treat. Even on the drive home, Rydal was frantically trying to get into the boot to nab the last one (spoiler: the donuts didn’t stand a chance).
Once we’d made our way back to the start, plenty of us stayed around for some well-deserved scran and a pint. The crack was spot-on, and the weather couldn’t have been better. Scott, though, had to nash home to watch the football (poor lad—he’d have been better off sticking to the hills after that dismal display against Fulham).

Oh, and big news – on the way up the trail, we kicked off our brand-new Spotify podcast! It’s a lighthearted listen where we’ll be chatting about all things adventure, life, and the many mishaps we’ve had while out exploring. Expect laughs, stories, and a bit of Geordie wisdom along the way. You can have a deeky here! We’ll be dropping an episode a week!
We’ve got loads lined up for March, including our next big hike announcement and a cracking overnight retreat on the 29th. If you fancy getting involved, make sure you’re following us on socials to stay up to date, because trust us, you don’t want to miss what’s coming!
Thanks to everyone who joined us at Roseberry Topping – it wouldn’t have been the same without you and makes all the preparation and stress worth it. Here’s to more hikes, more laughs, and maybe another shot at bagging that last donut, if the dogs don’t beat us to it eh!
See you on the trails, ramblers!
Scott and Steph x
