Holywell Dene: A Scenic 5-Mile Circular Walk to Seaton Sluice Beach

If you’re looking for the perfect combination of nature, history, and a beautiful white sandy beach, the Holywell Dene to Seaton Sluice Beach walk is a must-do! This 5-mile circular route takes you through lush woodlands, along peaceful riverbanks, and finishes at one of the North East’s most beautiful beaches. Along the way, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy the best fish and chips in the region at Harbour View in Seaton Sluice (closed on Sundays)!

Starting at Holywell Dene:

The hike begins in Holywell, just a short drive from Whitley Bay. The Holywell Dene itself is a picturesque wooded valley, often overlooked by many, but its tranquil atmosphere and lush landscape make it a hidden gem in the North East. The route starts by taking you along the Holywell Dene Trail, a well-maintained path that weaves through the woodlands. The dene is filled with vibrant vegetation, and depending on the season, you’ll experience the lush greenery of summer or the rich hues of autumn.

Following the Seaton Burn:

As you continue along the trail, you’ll follow the Seaton Burn. Along the way, you’ll have occasional glimpses of local wildlife, including birds and small mammals, part of the walk passes through a nature reserve, so it’s important to keep your dog on a lead to help protect the local wildlife and preserve the area’s natural habitat. The path gradually leads you out of the dene, bringing you closer to the coast, where the countryside meets the sea, offering spectacular views as you approach Seaton Sluice.

Reaching Seaton Sluice Beach:

After about 2.5 miles, you’ll emerge from the woods and arrive at the village of Seaton Sluice, known for its peaceful beach and quaint harbour. This stretch of coastline is less crowded than some of the region’s more famous beaches. Once at the beach, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the North Sea. 

Harbour View: The Best Fish & Chips in the North East

A highlight of this walk is a stop at Harbour View Fish and Chips. Just a short walk from Seaton Sluice Beach, this family-run fish and chip shop is often praised as one of the best in the North East. Known for serving freshly caught fish and crispy golden chips, Harbour View is the perfect place to refuel after your hike. Whether you go for the classic battered cod or another fresh fish option, every meal is prepared to perfection.

You can enjoy your fish and chips by the harbour or take your meal to the beach, making for the perfect end to a scenic coastal adventure.

The Return Journey:

After indulging in your fish and chips, it’s time to complete the circular route. From Seaton Sluice, you’ll follow the trail back towards Holywell The return leg is just as scenic, with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

  • Not suitable for wheelchair and pushchairs

  • Parking: Free on-street parking is available at the start of the walk in Holywell, or a few roadside spaces and small car park on Hartley Lane. Alternatively, start and end your walk at Seaton Sluice Beach.
