Hiking the Garrigill to Ashgill Force: A Scenic 3-Mile Circular Trail

The Garrigill to Ashgill Force circular trail is a 3-mile walk that offers the best of the North Pennines; beautiful countryside, a peaceful river, and the stunning Ashgill Force waterfall. It’s a short yet rewarding hike that’s perfect for families, beginners, or anyone looking to enjoy a peaceful escape into nature.

Starting at Garrigill:

We began our journey in the village of Garrigill, a small, quiet spot in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From here, we ventured onto quiet country lanes, slowly leaving the village behind and heading into the open countryside with scenic views of the rolling hills and open fields. The route is easy-going, making it a lovely walk for all levels.

Along the way, we spotted some local wildlife including ducks, birds and we’re pretty sure we also seen a badger running into the distance!

Reaching Ashgill Force:

The highlight of our hike was, of course, Ashgill Force. When we reached the waterfall, we were immediately struck by how beautiful and serene it was, even better that we had it to ourselves (on a Saturday afternoon!). The waterfall cascades down from a height of about 20 feet, but what makes it so special is that you can actually walk behind the falls. It’s a rare opportunity to get up close and experience the power of the waterfall from behind the cascading water. This unique perspective makes Ashgill Force a true hidden gem in the North Pennines.

The surrounding woodland adds to the charm of the spot, and it was the perfect place to pause and enjoy the scenery. The sound of the waterfall was mesmerising, and it felt like the perfect moment to pause, take it all in and appreciate the natural beauty of the area.

Looping Back to Garrigill:

After spending some time at Ashgill Force (although we could’ve stayed there all day!) we continued on the trail, looping back towards Garrigill. The return leg of the walk is just as lovely, we followed the trail alongside the river.

The relatively flat and gentle nature of the route means it’s an easy walk that doesn’t feel too taxing, making it ideal for a relaxed afternoon outing.

The walk was the perfect way to escape into nature for a few hours, and we couldn’t recommend it enough. Plus, its only a 1 hour 10 minute drive from Newcastle City.
